Some babies have bulgy belly button. The belly button appears as it is swollen. This is called umbilical hernia. It becomes more obvious while baby cries. It goes inside when you put pressure with your finger but comes out again as soon as the pressure is released. There is a small percentage of children roughly 5 to 10% who are born with it. It is not dangerous or scary though. It disappears usually at the age of 5 to 6 months or as soon as the babies are able to sit on their own. Sometimes, it may take longer given the size is bigger and settle down by 3 to 4 years of age. However if it remains even after 4 years age then you may go for a small surgery with which it is being settled to the normal position.
