GAS OR COLIC ISSUES

GAS OR COLIC ISSUES

Gas problem is common in babies. Babies suck in air while taking feed and that results in gas. It settles down when babies start solids. As suggested in each breastfeeding position that rightly placing the nipple along with areola helps greatly in overcoming the gas problem as well. Additionally, never forget burping your baby after every feed. It is better to do it on changing sides even between a single feed. It helps digestion. Put your baby on one side with her head staying on your shoulder and her stomach being touched to your chest. Pat her back softly with your hand. She would burp sometimes quickly and other times in few minutes depending how full her stomach is. Fuller the stomach, quicker the burp would be.  You may use “Gripe Water” as that helps the digestion. There are different brands available in the market. The dosage is mentioned on label. It usually is a tea spoon after every eight hours during first 4 months.

Mothers are advised to be tolerant as babies find it difficult and sometimes cry a lot which apparently seems without any reason. However if everything else is fine and baby is still crying then she is suffering with gas. You may try additional dose of gripe water if he seems to be struggling and finding it troublesome. Another option is colic drops. These too are available in the market. The dosages is prescribed in drops per kilo gram of weight. You can also put baby on her tummy and pat lightly or massage her back. This would help release the gas and make baby calm. Don’t panic if it prolongs. It is difficult seeing a baby crying for long. Just be patient and help her through massage, patting and distracting through toys. This struggle automatically gets over with start of solids.
