VIRAL INFECTIONS

VIRAL INFECTIONS

Breastfeeding strengthens baby’s immune system and help fight him against viral infections. There however still chances are that baby gets such infections. This could be from their sick siblings, parents, grandparents or other family members. Protect your baby from others who are suffering with cold, flu or cough. Advise them to put on masks so they don’t pass on their infection to others. Antibiotics are not good at all specifically for children under 2 years of age.

Check temperature of your child after intervals and don’t use any medicine if it stays below 100 ° F. You can use Joshanda. Joshanda is made up of herbs. It is very effective in treating cold, cough and flu. One sachet makes one cup of Joshanda which is a normal dose for elders. However for babies, you can make a cup or a half cup with half sachet. Use a tea spoon by adding a honey drop. The recommended dosage is one tea spoon three times a day.  It may cause some digestion issues as side effects on baby. Your baby may face constipation or motions as a result but this is safer than any medicine specifically antibiotics.

For blocked nasal passage, normal saline drops can be used in the mornings and evenings, one drop in each nostril. This ease up breathing by clearing the nasal passage and helps baby in recovery. If blockage is making breathing more difficult than you can use nebulizer by using normal saline. It takes between 3 to 7 days to settle down. You can follow these home remedies for 3 to 7 days as long as fever is below 100 ° F and baby’s chest is clear. However if you observe any congestion on chest or fever increases beyond 100 ° F then visit doctor immediately.

You are advised to maintain a small first aid baby kit at home that should include a thermometer, normal saline nasal drops, a nebulizer, ORS, poly fax eye ointment, few sachets of Joshanda.
